maratha clans

21-may-2015

The origin of the word Maratha is in the ancient Prakrit word `Marhatta', which was used for all the people of Maharashtra. Ancient Maharashtra was geographically bigger one than today's Maharashtra, consisting almost all the parts of Deccan

It should be noted that Peshavas, who were Chitpavan Bramhins by caste, were also known as Marathas. The Muslim Queen of Ahmednagar Chandbibi was also known as a Maratha.

  2. Many surname are found in other castes from the list above. I see many surnames like my (maternal surname) Dalvi, Sule, Lade, Kelkar, Gore , Patkar, Vaze also found in CKP and Bramhins. I have seen surnames like Vaidya in many castes which is surprising. Slowly castes are getting invisible to be identified by surnames.

    9. Satam or Satham : Main roots are from Jadhav family.
Relation with great maratha warriors s mother- Jijabai jadhaav family.

Sad party this surname is given by Adilshah to us . Myself Nikhil Dilip Satam - Origin Advali,Malvan.

Our ancestors were at that time working for Adilshah and in 1 battle while fighting he killed 60 people . For killing 60 ppl (Amah - Atma) padvi given to him .

From Sath amah it's become Satam /satham.

Belongs to 96 kuli Maratha (sub clan of Jadhav family)
But yes slowly nearby villages SC ST caste also adapted this surname.

Advali is considered as Main hometown of Satam .Later people travelled other places in Konkan.
For eg ppl in Koil are originally from(roots) Advali only though they celebrate 1 gaav 1 ganpati.

  36. Nowadays Marathas are asking for reservations. Why we need it?
There are panch kuli maratha, sapt kuli maratha, 96 kuli maratha, sakal maratha, kunbi maratha, aad maratha, other maratha. Which of these needs reservations and why?

    ReplyDelete
  37. The 96 kuli Marathas are NOT really marathi. They were brought to maharashtra as warriors/fighters by different kings/rulers of earlier Maharashtra and they became part of Maharashtra and began to rule Maharashtrians and now Marathas control Maharashtra.
like, in America Red-Indians are the real inhabitants of America and now they are ruled by outsiders who migrated into America from Different and countries

  39. Marathas are rich and affluent but many of them are very poor and not getting government jobs and college admission just because they belong to Maratha Caste (ie General Category) So Reservation is needed for such poor Marathas and NOT for all the Marathas. In the same way there are very rich and affluent people in SC/ST/OBC So Reservation should NOT be given to such SC/ST/OBC

    1. Ghadi is an important post of the temples in South ratnagiri, sindhudurga, goa and some of belgaon parts. This post was assigned to maratha clans. So ghadi people were having different surnames earlier like rane, sawant, tawde, jadhav etc. Example Naringre, devgad ghadi people were jadhav and shirwande, malvan ghadi were rane ... So as per surnames their are different kuls.. but most of them is tuljabhavani and khandoba...

  80. This is not authentic list. Definition is changed to include many at will.

many names are claimed as Maratha have nothing to do with Maratha. Name of Chitnis / Kale ridiculous. I understand the eagerness and attractions of CKP to be recognized under Maratha but then in they effort the authenticity of Maratha list is lost.

Also we can see the hierarchy is changed at will for example due to jealousy of greedy chitnis losing Dabhol to RajeShirke, Raje Shirke name is not included in main clans. Nothing will happen to Rajeshirke family status, on the other hand list loses its veracity
